Attaining a maximum length of 80 inches and weights over 100 lbs, the cobia has an elongated body and a broad, flattened head.  It is dark brown in color, grading to white on the belly with two darker brown horizontal bands on the flanks. The stripes are more prominent during spawning, when they darken and the background color lightens.

The cobia is a pelagic spawner, and normally solitary except for annual spawning aggregations, and sometimes it will congregate at reefs, wrecks, harbors, buoys, and other structural oases. Breeding activity takes place diurnally from April to September in large offshore congregations, where the female is capable of spawning up to 30 times during the season. It is pelagic, but it may enter estuaries and mangroves in search of prey. The cobia feeds primarily on crabs, squid, and fish. It will follow larger animals such as sharks, turtles, and manta rays to scavenge. It is a very curious fish, showing little fear of boats.

Cobia season is open year-round and they are one of the more aggressive fish species in our region.

May through October is the best time of year to target cobia. They school in small numbers, ranging in size from 20 to 50 lbs. They are often caught around the shallow water oil rigs in late summer and early fall. During the spring months, they are caught deep.

Cobia are commonly caught with jigging techniques, along with chumming and some trolling. Most cobia are often caught alongside of red snapper, as the two species share the same habitats and structures. Cobia are exciting to catch as they break the surface, displaying acrobatics and fierce pulling.
